The short answer
A longer boiler warranty provides cover against the most expensive components — the heat exchanger — during the years when failures are most likely. Standard warranties run 2–5 years; premium brands such as Worcester Bosch and Vaillant offer up to 10 years through their accredited installer networks. Registering the warranty promptly and completing an annual service are usually conditions of the extended term. See also our guide on combi boiler brands.
A boiler warranty is not just a sales number: it is a direct indicator of the manufacturer’s confidence in their product and a financial protection for one of the most expensive household appliances you own. Understanding what different warranty lengths actually cover — and what conditions must be met to keep them valid — helps you compare quotes on a like-for-like basis.

What a warranty covers
A manufacturer’s warranty on a new boiler covers defects in materials and workmanship — in practice, components that fail prematurely rather than through normal wear. Most warranties cover the parts and, in longer warranties, also the labour to replace them. The most important covered component is the heat exchanger, which is the most expensive single part in a boiler — replacement outside warranty can cost £400–£900 including labour. A 10-year warranty that covers the heat exchanger provides meaningful financial protection over the years when failures are statistically most likely to occur (years 7–12 of a boiler’s life). A 2-year warranty offers the same protection as the statutory Consumer Rights Act guarantee and is not much better than the legal minimum.
| Warranty length | Typical brands | Heat exchanger included? | Annual service condition? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–3 years | Budget / entry-level | Usually yes | Usually yes |
| 5–7 years | Baxi, Ideal, Glow-worm | Yes | Yes |
| Up to 10 years | Worcester Bosch, Vaillant | Yes | Yes — annual service required |
Conditions that keep a warranty valid
A manufacturer’s extended warranty almost always comes with conditions. The most common are: the boiler must be registered with the manufacturer within a set period (typically 30 days of installation); it must be serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer; and in some cases it must have been installed by a manufacturer-accredited engineer (such as a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer or a Vaillant Advanced Installer). Failure to service annually is the most common reason warranty claims are rejected. Keep the service records — the Benchmark Commissioning Checklist from installation and the engineer’s service report each year — as evidence the conditions have been met.
Worcester Bosch and Vaillant’s 10-year warranty
Both Worcester Bosch and Vaillant offer up to 10-year parts-and-labour warranties on qualifying models when installed by their respective accredited engineer networks. Worcester Bosch’s Accredited Installer scheme requires the boiler to be registered online within 30 days; Vaillant’s Advanced Installer scheme operates similarly. In both cases, the engineer must be both Gas Safe registered and hold the manufacturer’s own accreditation. When comparing quotes, ask whether the engineer is accredited and whether the 10-year warranty will be registered on completion — if not, you may only receive the standard warranty of 5 years or less. See our comparison of Worcester, Vaillant and Ideal for a brand-level view.
Is an extended warranty worth paying for?
The value of an extended warranty depends on the likelihood of a failure during the extended period and the cost of that failure. Heat exchanger failures are the most financially significant risk; if yours occurs at year 8 and the warranty covers labour and parts, you could save £600–£1,000. The additional cost of a premium boiler with a 10-year warranty over a mid-range boiler with a 5-year warranty is typically £300–£600. If you value certainty — knowing the boiler is covered — and plan to stay in the property for more than 7 years, the case for a longer warranty is strong. If you plan to sell within 5 years, a mid-range boiler with a 5–7 year warranty may be sufficient. This is general information; the right choice depends on your circumstances and preferences, and a Gas Safe registered engineer can advise on boiler models and warranty terms.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a boiler warranty be?
A minimum of 5 years is worth looking for; 10 years provides the best long-term protection if the boiler is installed by an accredited engineer and serviced annually. A 2-year warranty is not much above the legal minimum and provides limited peace of mind.
What does a boiler warranty cover?
Most manufacturer warranties cover defects in parts and workmanship, including the heat exchanger. Longer warranties typically also cover labour. They do not cover normal wear, accidental damage, or failures caused by not having the boiler serviced annually.
Do I need to get my boiler serviced to keep the warranty valid?
Yes. Annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer is a condition of most boiler manufacturers’ extended warranties. Failure to service the boiler annually is the most common reason warranty claims are rejected.
Can I extend my boiler warranty after purchase?
Some manufacturers and third parties offer extended warranty plans that can be purchased separately after installation. These vary widely in cost and coverage; read the terms carefully and compare them against the typical cost of likely repairs before deciding.
